Sonja - midday DJ on rock station FM99

Me, sitting at the mic across the table from Sonja
So last Monday was my "15 minutes of fame"... well, actually it was
60 minutes to be precise! My favorite local rock station offers listeners the opportunity to submit a list of songs for the Monday "Roll Your Own Lunch" hour. If your compliation is chosen, you're invited up to the radio station to co-host the noon to 1 p.m. broadcast with DJ Sonja, and talk about your tune choices on the air.
My friend Whirling Dervish and I submitted our list a few weeks ago, and we screamed when we got Sonja's email response three days later, offering us the Monday November 13th lunchtime co-host gig with her! OMG, what to wear, what to wear?!?! DOH!...blonde moment... we're on the radio... no one will see us! We'll just give management a vague excuse as to why we need to be gone for two hours during work, sneak off to do the show, and be back at our desks by 1:30, no one being the wiser.
The morning of the show, we anxiously kept our ears trained on the radios on our respective desks. Each time we'd hear the promo for Sonja's "Roll Your Own Lunch", one of us would ring the other's desk across the office and say, "Did you hear that? That's our names!" and we'd laugh nervously. We were determined we'd be some kick-ass cohosts, and bring a little "girl power" to what mostly seemed to be dudes cohosting on Mondays.
When we got to the studio, Sonja was so friendly and we hit it off with her immediately. We took our places around the table across from her, and sidled up to our microphones, chatting briefly as she explained the order of the 9 songs she had chosen from the list of 14 we submitted, and how it would all unfold once the mics were "live". She then introduced us on the air, and we talked a bit about ourselves, explaining the theme to our song list was tunes that helped us get thru our divorces.... some hard rockin' and angry... some sexy and bluesy... with music being the perfect place to channel emotion on the way to recovery.
It was such a great time! Pizza was delivered to the studio, and the three of us chatted nonstop the whole hour in the studio on everthing from concert stories, to divorce lawyers, to dogs, to assorted girl talk. At one point we got so engrossed in talking about the Alice In Chains and the Staind concerts off the air, that Sonja forgot to go back live and introduce the next song with us. Luckily, the computer program automatically kicked in to a commercial so there is never any "dead airtime" in this day and age of radio.
During the 4 times or so we were talking on the air with Sonja, I publicly confessed my love for Aaron Lewis of the group Staind, and for Shaun Morgan of Seether....wonder if either heard me? LOL But the absolute highlight had to be when the Whirling Dervish was asked why she chose "Since I've Been Lovin' You" by Led Zeppelin, and she told all of Virginia (and parts of North Carolina) that this song was the reason behind the conception of her children. Alrighty then!
All in all, I think we really did a great job, and were quite entertaining. Apparently, someone else thought so too.... later that afternoon, Sonja forwarded us an email from one of her male listeners who hoped that Sonja would let us know how much he could relate to what we were saying, and how much he enjoyed our compliation of songs. However, he misspelled it as "copulation" of songs... surely a Freudian slip after listening to Whirling Dervish's Led Zep song revelation.
Awww, shucks.... our first "fan mail"!!
...and in listening back to the CD recording of our radio gig ... you'll be glad to know that I only said the word "wonderful" once!!! :) -Six
