 My "Fifteen Minutes"

Sonja - midday DJ on rock station FM99

Me, sitting at the mic across the table from Sonja

So last Monday was my "15 minutes of fame"... well, actually it was 60 minutes to be precise! My favorite local rock station offers listeners the opportunity to submit a list of songs for the Monday "Roll Your Own Lunch" hour. If your compliation is chosen, you're invited up to the radio station to co-host the noon to 1 p.m. broadcast with DJ Sonja, and talk about your tune choices on the air.

My friend Whirling Dervish and I submitted our list a few weeks ago, and we screamed when we got Sonja's email response three days later, offering us the Monday November 13th lunchtime co-host gig with her! OMG, what to wear, what to wear?!?! DOH!...blonde moment... we're on the radio... no one will see us! We'll just give management a vague excuse as to why we need to be gone for two hours during work, sneak off to do the show, and be back at our desks by 1:30, no one being the wiser.

The morning of the show, we anxiously kept our ears trained on the radios on our respective desks. Each time we'd hear the promo for Sonja's "Roll Your Own Lunch", one of us would ring the other's desk across the office and say, "Did you hear that? That's our names!" and we'd laugh nervously. We were determined we'd be some kick-ass cohosts, and bring a little "girl power" to what mostly seemed to be dudes cohosting on Mondays.

When we got to the studio, Sonja was so friendly and we hit it off with her immediately. We took our places around the table across from her, and sidled up to our microphones, chatting briefly as she explained the order of the 9 songs she had chosen from the list of 14 we submitted, and how it would all unfold once the mics were "live". She then introduced us on the air, and we talked a bit about ourselves, explaining the theme to our song list was tunes that helped us get thru our divorces.... some hard rockin' and angry... some sexy and bluesy... with music being the perfect place to channel emotion on the way to recovery.

It was such a great time! Pizza was delivered to the studio, and the three of us chatted nonstop the whole hour in the studio on everthing from concert stories, to divorce lawyers, to dogs, to assorted girl talk. At one point we got so engrossed in talking about the Alice In Chains and the Staind concerts off the air, that Sonja forgot to go back live and introduce the next song with us. Luckily, the computer program automatically kicked in to a commercial so there is never any "dead airtime" in this day and age of radio.

During the 4 times or so we were talking on the air with Sonja, I publicly confessed my love for Aaron Lewis of the group Staind, and for Shaun Morgan of Seether....wonder if either heard me? LOL  But the absolute highlight had to be when the Whirling Dervish was asked why she chose "Since I've Been Lovin' You" by Led Zeppelin, and she told all of Virginia (and parts of North Carolina) that this song was the reason behind the conception of her children.  Alrighty then!

All in all, I think we really did a great job, and were quite entertaining. Apparently, someone else thought so too.... later that afternoon, Sonja forwarded us an email from one of her male listeners who hoped that Sonja would let us know how much he could relate to what we were saying, and how much he enjoyed our compliation of songs.  However, he misspelled it as "copulation" of songs... surely a Freudian slip after listening to Whirling Dervish's Led Zep song revelation.

Awww, shucks.... our first "fan mail"!!

...and in listening back to the CD recording of our radio gig ... you'll be glad to know that I only said  the word "wonderful" once!!!   :) -Six

Our songs:
Foo Fighters - "Best of You"
Stevie Ray Vaughan - "The Sky is Crying"
Disturbed - "Down With The Sickness"
Staind - "Mudshovel"
Led Zeppelin - "Since I've Been Lovin' You"
Chevelle - "Vitamin R"
Fuel - "Hemorrhage"
Tool - "Aenema"
Seether - "Truth"

 Veterans Day 2006

Freedom isn't free..... Thank a Veteran!

Just before Veterans Day last year, I "adopted" 1st Lt. James thru the anysoldier.com website, and a very rewarding email friendship began.  James is a young Marine Corps officer who was stationed with the Camp Lejeune 4th Marine Division just outside of Ramadi, Iraq at that time, finishing the last four months of his year-long tour there.   I enjoyed reading what life was like for a Marine in the war zone, and he enjoyed the small taste of home that I was to him.

James came home safely back to NC, and I've never forgotten him.

Thru anysoldier.com this year, I have just "adopted" Marine Sgt Dean, who is a canine handler stationed near Haditha, Iraq.  He and his German Shepherd dog "Bono" are part of a K-9 Team which has the unenviable job of searching out improvised explosive devices, and keeping our troops out of harm's way.

The average age of a Soldier is 19....
They are our Sons and Daughters, Brothers and  Sisters, Neighbors and Friends

Happy Veterans Day..... Thank you for your Service
God Bless Our Troops

 Angel Hair

"I'm losing my hair this Monday," Mom announced, quite matter of factly over the phone the other day... as nonchalantly as if she were talking about the weather.

"You are?" I asked, quite puzzled, but a little amused. "How do you know?"

"Well, because the doctors and nurses have told me. And the other patients I've met have confirmed the same thing. On the 14th day after your first chemotherapy treatment, you can expect your hair to immediately start falling out in clumps. So I'm losing my hair on Monday."

Aww...I love my Mom so very much! She's had such a positive attitude since recently learning she has lymphoma. Her first chemotherapy treatment was 13 days ago. Mom has 18 weeks of treatments ahead of her.

She and my Dad went out shopping for a wig during the past week, in preparation for Monday's cruel event. They're very expensive, those wigs, and daggone if Dad didn't spot a flirty blonde number for Mom... and it turns out it was on sale for half-price! Of course, she totally rocked the 'do when she tried it on, and Dad happily handed the bank card to the clerk and told her to wrap it up.

Oh, the Heavens are smiling down on Mom, I am convinced!

During Mom's first 4 hour long chemotherapy treatment, she told me there was an elderly man in the "lounge chair" next to hers, and he was also hooked up to his own chemo-cocktail getting treatment. She said he was slight of build, had thick white hair, and beared an uncanny resemblance to her late Father. For some reason, he took her under his wing and said, "I just want you to know that everything is going to be okay. I'll look after you while you're here. I'll make sure they treat you right!"

That gave me chills as Mom shared that story. I sensed she had encountered an Angel brought to comfort her.

After a while, when one chemo bag was close to emptying, the watchful, benevolent white haired man next to her noticed right away. He called out to the nurses to come take care of Mom, and start her next dose.

I grinned thru the phone. "Mom, don't you see that Grandpa was communicating with you then, and he wants you to know he's going to watch over you?"

"Oh, I don't know about all that!" Mom said. And that's okay... I know my spirituality is far more metaphysically based than hers.

But I also know what I know....

Yes, Grandpa Scott... you are looking out for your daughter, my Mother... and everything really IS going to be okay. Thank you so very much!

My heart-felt thanks to all who have sent their positive thoughts and prayers, and have inquired about Mom. I appreciate you all! :) -Six

 Friday Night Surprise

Our view from behind the glass - Admirals try to get it together

Friday Night Surprise

I wanted a way to thank my good friend
For all the kind things he has done
So he jumped in the truck and I took him downtown
To show him a whole lotta fun

Where we would land he had not a clue
My secret was my surprise
But when I asked if he liked musicals
Terror instantly filled his large eyes

Oh silly boy… would I really do that?
Make you sit thru a show with Clay Aiken?
Look over there… it’s our AHL Hockey
Now will you please stop all your shakin’?

We got us some popcorn and soda and beer
Then found our seats down by the floor
We got hunkered down as the action began
And cheered on the Norfolk Admirals to score

The Phantoms were skating and ruling the ice
Our poor Admirals attempts were so futile
Five minutes left and we’re down 5 to 2
Those Philly fans’ taunts were so brutal!

Then our Boys came to life shooting goal after goal
Totally dominating the ice and the puck
Our Admirals tied the score and won in OT
And left stunned Philly fans asking WTF??

heh heh  ;) -Six
