 Goodnight, Sweet Cat
Back to Full Blog

Checkers a.k.a "Old Girl"

This afternoon, we lost our beloved companion cat of almost 13 years. While Checkers was ill for the last month, and the end was not unexpected, I don't think you're ever really prepared for the day it comes.

Checkers had a great life, and was spoiled nicely with love by my daughter... from the day we brought that shy little kitten home as a surprise for Chelsea when she was a kindergardener... right up until her last morning on this earth today during Chelsea's senior year.

Her regal presence will be sorely missed.

Goodnight, Sweet Cat... sleep well in Heaven's Calico Palace

Sorry to see you lose a "Grand Old Lady", it is never easy to say goodbye.

But that Calico had a pretty good life I bet and I know Woogie was impressed.

Best wishes,
Prank

My daughter now owns six cats. Each has its own individual personality, and the one that was a feral cat simply adores her. He won't let her out his sight if possible, and on those occasions when he can't see or find her, he cries out for her. He sleeps in her bed with her and wakes her up in the morning by licking her face or kneading her hair.

I know how difficult it must be for you, and especially your daughter, to lose a pet you have loved for so many years. Just remember the good times.

Sorry to hear about your family's loss of a dear friend, actually it must be like losing a member of the family. We have had Deano for 5.5 years and it is amazing how human pets really are. Letting go is never easy and I have a feeling the Calico Heaven is filled with cat toys and catnip tonight...Colo

Awwww I was going to sign off and I read you blog Six, I'm so sorry about Checkers...My deepest condolences to you and your daughter, losing a pet is truly losing a family member...it is so sad. This really touched my heart...and what a very cute cat Checkers was. But to have him 13 years that says just how much he loved you and your daughter that is such a nice long life for a cat.

Ooops sorry I meant "she" and "her" about Checkers..I have a boy bunny so now all animals are male to me..I know I am weird. But I hope you and your daughter's sadness will quickly be replaced by all the happy memories you have of Checkers.

It may go to explain why I don't get invited to dinner. . . much: The loss of an animal is more difficult for me than the loss of a human. Understand: Losing a family member or close friend is devastating for me, but the loss of an animal is more so.

I feel your loss. When I lost 'the lil' man' I didn't get another dog for almost three years. But when I did, well, the 'white terror' brings me much pleasure these days.

Even if he sleeps on the bed, sheds, and drools on my pillow. (It makes for an interesting. . . hair gel.)

So sorry for your loss. They become so much a part of the family. I've lost a few pets and it is hard. I say I'll never get another pet but I usually do. Your cat was beautiful. She looks so sweet!!

I am very sorry to hear about your cat. Pets really are part of the family, especially an animal you have been around that many years.

Sweet Six I can feel with you so much, it hurts me just to think about it. I lost many cat's and dog's over the years and all where over 15 years old. There all are our children in one way. I go to the side in the Internet,"Do Animals go to Heaven" it makes me feel better to know where my cat or dog is. Love Madie

Six, Madie made me think of a point that was made by Thomisticguy, he doesn't believe that animals go to heaven. I don't know why but I can only answer that the lamb can not lay down with the lion in Heaven if animals are not there.

I know they are given to us to love them and to teach us unconditional love, if we let them. I mourn your loss. I still miss Muffin my second cat, but the first cat that was just mine. I was four so 38 years ago come this Christmas she was mine. We were inseperable. I broght her for show and tell so much that the kids new and loved her too. She loved riding the bus to school.

Take care and don't let your pain keep you from finding love again. There is a special cat waiting to help you get though this time. Let it. Beth.

Thank you Madie & Dazey. I appreciate your sympathy. It's kinda quiet without Checkers around now, but her memory lives on. :) -Six

BethAnne, that was about the sweetest thing I've ever heard! Thank you so much for those comforting words. Today has been one week, and while I know Checkers is no longer suffering, I do miss her around the house, as does my daughter. I picked a handful of the most fragrant magnolia blossoms, and laid them on her resting place under the beautiful tree this afternoon. :) -Six
